363 more PG medical seats up for grabs

The state will have 363 more post graduate medical seats up for grabs at private medical colleges and deemed medical universities for the coming academic year through the ongoing seat allotment process.

BENGALURU: The state will have 363 more post graduate medical seats up for grabs at private medical colleges and deemed medical universities for the coming academic year through the ongoing seat allotment process.

Apart from regular seats which they share with the state government under consensual agreement, from this year all private and deemed medical universities agreed to set aside 30 per cent seats for students from Karnataka from their institutional (private) quota.

Thus the percentage of seats available to Karnataka students this year is nearly 64 per cent of the total 2,281 PG medical seats available.

This is following the amendments brought to Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Act, 2006 which made it mandatory for private, deemed universities to set aside 30 per cent seats in their institutional quota for Karnataka students.

As a result of this amendment, the number of PG seats available to state students at private medical colleges has increased from 1,096 to 1,459 this year.

There will not be any concession for these 30 per cent seats and candidates have to pay fees that will be fixed based on the consensual agreement between the state government and private medical colleges and deemed universities.

Dr Sharan Prakash Patil, Medical Education Minister, said, “We wanted priority to be given to students from the state. Though there will be eligible students, as there was no priority in institutional quota, most eligible students from state used to miss seats. Considering that, we have convinced the managements to give 30 per cent seats to state students and they agreed.”
