Building tilts precariously in Bengaluru after record rainfall

BENGALURU: After Bengaluru experienced a record breaking downpour on Independence Day, an under construction building on the verge of collapse at Ejipura, made life difficult for several residents.

The five-storey building located near Ejipura 14th main began to tilt at around 4.30 am, and Fire and Emergency Services personnel were on the spot by 5 am, said locals.

Two nearby buildings were evacuated to prevent untoward incidents. BBMP officials at the spot said that the owner of the building had applied for an underground drainage connection which had not been sanctioned.

He then dug a large pit in front of the building where water accumulated and seeped in following the deluge on August 15, weakening the foundation which subsequently sank, said officials. Police officials have currently cordoned off the area, with demolition engineers at the spot.

Meanwhile, the deluge continued to affect people across Bengaluru. Bellandur Lake continued to froth due to pollution, despite the massive de-weeding exercise recently, affecting residents near the lake. Few streets in HSR Layout, Koramangala and Eshwara Layout were also still inundated.

However, the city received only moderate showers as compared to Tuesday. Kengeri reportedly received maximum rainfall of 68 mm. Areas which were at the center of the downpour, such as Lakkasandra, Koramangala and Bilekahalli received 17.5 mm, 12.5 mm and 30 mm rainfall respectively.
