BENGALURU: A 50-year-old teacher who was set afire by her friend while she was taking a class in Government Lower Primary School in Shambaihana Halli is battling for her life. On Wednesday afternoon, Sunanda was set ablaze by her friend Renukaradhya, who is a small-time businessman.

According to doctors treating her at Srilakshmi Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sunanda has sustained 65 to 80 per cent burns. “Her condition is critical. She has suffered burns from head to waist,” said Dr Nikhil. General Surgeon Dr Giridhar performed the second surgery on Sunanda on Thursday night.

V S Ugrappa, MLC and chairperson of committee on preventing violence against women and children visited the hospital and spoke to family members for nearly an hour. “I will extend support to the family,” he said.

Police sources said Sunanda was not married to Renukaradhya but was into a live-in relationship with him.
Sunanda’s brother Praveen, however, told Express, “My sister had some financial commitments with Renukaradhya but they were never married. She lived alone and her adopted son was staying in a hostel. She had a divorce six years ago. For all these years, we have been living separately.”

Bengaluru rural SP Ramesh B said, “We have already collected information about Renukaradhya and he will be arrested soon. Preliminary inquiry suggests that financial dispute between the duo led to the incident.”
