Over 1,500 attend Onam cookout in Bengaluru

For eleven years, the Onam Committee of South City JP Nagar 7th Phase has been organising festival celebration in the city. This year was no different.

BENGALURU: For eleven years, the Onam Committee of South City JP Nagar 7th Phase has been organising festival celebration in the city. This year was no different.

The festivities were held on August 26 and 27. The first day of the event saw over 1,500 visitors and 500 participants. Fourty-two stalls were set up and friends and relatives from other areas also joined in the celebration making it more of a get-together.

“On August 26, we were blessed with good sunshine. So outdoor events went smoothly,” says the chairman of the South City Onam committee.

The events were planned to appeal to all age groups. On the first day, Thrissur-based artistes performed their signature traditional music on instruments made from bamboo. The event began at 4.30 pm and went on till 9.30 pm.

While children were busy with the games section such as boating in the pool and target shooting, adults were enjoying traditional and Bollywood numbers. There was an art competition organised for children and cooking competition for adults. Blood donation drive took place simultaneously.

On the morning of August 27, two-and-a-half hour long intense traditional martial arts programme was conducted for women. Besides this, Kathak and cinematic dances were also performed.

“The celebration is not only for Malayalis, but also for other communities,” says the chairman. “Out of 12 ladies participating in the traditional martial arts, only one was from Kerala, all others were from other states,” he adds.
