Principal in the dock for slapping, suspending child

FIR filed, child rights panel asks school to allow the Class 4 student to attend classes

BENGALURU: A nine-year-old boy, studying in Class 4, has been allegedly slapped by the principal of a private school in the city located in South Bengaluru. According to the complaint filed by the parents before the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KCPCR), the principal, who is also secretary of the school, allegedly slapped the child on November 14 on Children’s Day.

The parents even filed a case with the Magadi Road police. According to the complaint filed by the boy’s parents, the principal hit the child so hard that his left cheek was swollen. They tried to contact the principal over phone but received a rude response. Following this, they directly went to the school the next day and the principal tried to “attack” them.

The child was also suspended from the school, the complaint said. Based on the complaint, the commission filed a case of corporal punishment and issued summons to the principal to appear before it. It also directed the principal and school management to allow the child to attend classes regularly and immediately. Kripa Alva, chairperson of the commission, has passed an interim order directing the school that the child should be allowed in the school.

“After this, the authorities have been discriminating against our child and making him sit separately. They are even discriminating against our daughter studying in Class 2 in the same school,” the parents alleged. The parents have decided to approach the commission again over this.

‘Made To Wait Day-Long In Police Station’

The parents also alleged that the police ignored them. “A day after we filed the complaint, the police called us to the station for the child’s statement, but they made us wait from morning to evening and did not take the boy’s statement. And till date, they have not take any action,” the parents claimed. Reacting to the parents claim of making them wait at the station, a police official said there was no delay in taking up the case. He said the incident occurred around 5 pm, and the FIR was registered at 8 pm.
