Making the stars look good

BENGALURU: From the age of five, Marvie Ann Beck was certain that she was born to be an artist.
Today, having worked with two Oscar winning actors, Hilary Swank and Cate Blanchett, the makeup and hairstyling artist has her own academy that teaches students the skills to this art.

Her big break with a celebrity assignment remains a cherished one. “It was Aishwarya Rai. She was the newly crowned Miss World when I worked with her. She wasn’t a Bollywood star yet,” recalls Marvie.

Having worked with international stars and Bollywood actors such as Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, she notes how today “skin colour is second to talent and intellect”.

She adds that when it comes to wedding assignments, she insists that dusky brides “lighten the skin in the same undertone of dusky complexion”, so that they don’t look too “made up”. She, however, adds that irrespective of one’s complexion, the person should always opt for a lighter tone of make up.

When it comes to the groom, skin care and make up regimes are necessary too. So, do grooms worry about comments on their complexion as much as brides do? “The groom also gets light makeup done. Skin care and complexion of a groom discussed, but not on the same scale as the bride,” she says.

Marvie says that everyone wants to look fair. “Even those who are fair want to look fairer,” she adds.

Marvie says that most Bolllywood actors know what they want. They however, are fussy about their pick of makeup artist and hair stylist, she adds. Who in the industry needs a makeover and she responds, “ I would love to do a make-over for Alia Bhatt. She is gorgeous I can style her differently”.
