UK display team to be back with 6 aircraft

Performing exhilarating stunts and manoeuvres on an airplane with little margin for error is no simple task.

BENGALURU: Performing exhilarating stunts and manoeuvres on an airplane with little margin for error is no simple task. For viewers on the ground, the group of pilots might appear to be a gang of hot-blooded youths, trying to make a statement. Nothing, however, could be farther from truth - especially in the case of Yakovlevs.
Yakovlevs is an English aerobatic team where the youngest is 32-years-old. Most of the crew are aged closer to Den Harken (65), an active member of the team.

The group has featured in previous editions of the show. Encouraged by the response from the crowd here, Yakovlevs have decided to increase the number of aircraft in their team to six in the next edition of the expo.
Jez Hopkinson (in photo), lead pilot of Yakovlevs, said they had performed with four Russian Yak series aircraft in the show.

Adjusting to the weather conditions of the sub-continent is not an easy task, for both the members of the team and their aircraft. Hopkinson said there has been encouraging signs from Indian display teams. “It is lovely to see Surya Kirans flying again. Despite strong winds, the helicopter team (Sarang) also put up a good show.” He added that the air show was ‘incredibly well organised’ and as good as any air show in the world.
