Amend Lokayukta Act, Justice Shetty asks government

Lokayukta Justice P Vishwanatha Shetty has written to the state government recommending an amendment to the Karnataka Lokayukta Act.

BENGALURU: Lokayukta Justice P Vishwanatha Shetty has written to the state government recommending an amendment to the Karnataka Lokayukta Act. The amendment proposed is to Section 7 of the Act conferring powers on the government to issue a notification transferring cases/pending cases before the Lokayukta to one of the Upa Lokayuktas in the event of his inability to deal with them.
Justice Shetty’s recommendation comes in the light of concerns raised in some quarters over how the Lokayukta would deal with cases related to influential people, if there were any, whom he had represented earlier before the Supreme Court.

“If the Lokayukta feels he cannot hear certain cases due to his inability, he can recommend to the government to place cases before any one of the Upa Lokayuktas if the amendment is made,” the sources said.
Justice Shetty is said to have told the government that it may not be appropriate for him to deal with certain matters as he had appeared for the parties in the SC. “The government seems to be considering it positively,” sources in the office of Chief Secretary said.
