Cops book 400 drunk driving cases

The city traffic police booked 400 cases of drunk driving on New Year’s eve. Traffic police officials said they will recommend to the RTOs to cancel the licences of the violators.

BENGALURU: The city traffic police booked 400 cases of drunk driving on New Year’s eve. Traffic police officials said they will recommend to the RTOs to cancel the licences of the violators.

Interestingly, no major accidents caused by drunk driving were reported in the city on Saturday. This is mainly because police personnel, including senior officers, were on vigil throughout the city till 2am.

There were complaints that traffic cops were lenient with motorists who were driving under the influence of alcohol. Some motorists complained that many policemen were watching as youngsters, many of them under the influence of alcohol, rode bikes recklessly.

A senior traffic police official said, “The city was in a celebratory mood so we played an advisory role rather than booking cases. We advised many youngsters, who were drunk, to take a cab, Metro or a BMTC bus. We warned them of strict action if they drive under the influence of alcohol. We are happy that no major accidents were reported.”
