BBMP, tourism dept, MLA served notice for festival in indiranagar

A former IPS officer has challenged the proposal to organise an open street festival on 100-ft road, Indiranagar, on January 15, contending that the event will be a nightmare for residents.

BENGALURU: A former IPS officer has challenged the proposal to organise an open street festival on 100-ft road, Indiranagar, on January 15, contending that the event will be a nightmare for residents.

The petition was filed in the High Court by 76-year-old C Dinakar, former Director General and Inspector General of Police and a resident of HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar.

A division bench of Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice R B Budihal issued notice to the Chief Secretary, the Commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Commissioner of Tourism Department and MLA N A Haris of Shanthinagar constituency, and adjourned hearing to January 10.

Dinakar, who is practising law after retirement, contended that the one-day event will throw normal life out of gear, cause immense inconvenience to residents and motorists, and also damage the road as stalls and marquees will be put up.

Justice Mukherjee observed that when roads are closed for the conduct of such festivals, medical emergencies have to be taken care of. As far as schools and offices are concerned, he said, “You can apply for leave for a day. But there is no casual leave before Yamaraj.”
