Two held for stealing cab to smoke marijuana

During investigations, it was revealed that the accused had stolen the vehicle to smoke up marijuana.

BENGALURU: After a cinematic chase, the city police on Wednesday arrested two people who had escaped with a Uber cab after assaulting the driver and pushing him out of it. The incident took place on January 5.

According to police, Sheikh Shahnawaz (20), a resident of DJ Halli, and Syed Abbas (19), a resident of K G Halli, boarded the cab around 11.30 pm on January 5. Midway, the driver Shivanna stopped the car to attend nature’s call. When he returned to the car, the accused threatened him at knife point, pushed him out of the car, and fled with the vehicle.

Immediately, Shivanna rushed to K G Halli police station and filed a complaint. In swift action, four police constables were assigned to track the car. Police found out that the duo was near Nagawara junction on Wednesday morning around 5.30 am.

Police immediately rushed to the spot and when a team came near the car to inquire, Shahanawaz allegedly attacked them with a knife and Syed hit them with a stick. By the time the policemen recovered, the duo had escaped. Police chased them on their bikes and in a hurry, the accused hit the road divider and police eventually nabbed them.

The injured police constables are Sana, Kariyappa and Chand Sab Pasha. During investigations, it was revealed that the accused had stolen the vehicle to smoke up marijuana. Sheikh Shahnawaz is a habitual offender and a history-sheeter.

Police registered two cases against the duo -- one for the theft and another for hurting on-duty officials.
The accused were produced before a magistrate who handed them to judicial custody.
