BENGALURU: City’s pride Lalbagh Botanical Gardens is seeing a flood of visitors, as it opens the 205th edition of Lalbagh Flower show. The show, which started on Friday, will be open to the public till January 29. It is expected to see a footfall of nearly 4.5 lakh visitors.

Tight security arrangements have been made by the police department. There are 300 policemen on duty, security cameras installed across the garden, door-frame metal detectors and hand-held metal detectors.

The show has many varieties of flowers on display, but the ones that drew the largest crowds were Cymbidium orchids from Sikkim. They grow 5,000 feet above sea level, and are said to have been around since 1815. This is the first time that the horticulture department has brought this variety to the exhibition.

Many visitors were keen on taking photos with the peach, yellow and white-coloured orchids. Sanya Gupta, a techie from Koramangala, said, “These flowers are lovely,  I really wish to grow them in my house now.”

There were crowds around Begonia Semperflorens and Alstroemeria Lillys too. The horticulture department has brought the two for temporary display from the Hill Garden in Ooty.

The other favourites include Impatiens (which are often used as a herbal remedy to treat bee stings and rashes from Poison Ivy), Azalea (which are a favourite among gardeners but are also believed to be so toxic that their bouquets are sent as death threats) and Fuchsia (which is named after a German botanist Leonhart Fuchs).
