BENGALURU: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities started a drive against unauthorised advertisement hoardings in the city limits. Several hoardings were removed as part of the initiative on Monday.

A senior official from BBMP said that the drive was started in all eight zones including Bommanahalli, Dasarahalli, Mahadevapura, Byatarayanapura, Rajarajeshwarainagar, South, East and West.

Mayor G Padmavathi who had visited four zones said action shall be taken against offenders who put up such hoardings. "In order to fix illegal boards, trees have been axed at some places. In some places, agencies have used government land without permission. Our officials are also to be blamed,'' she said.

It can be recalled that in December 2016, the High Court took the BBMP to task over its poor performance in collection of advertisement tax. BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad had given an undertaking before the Court that it will remove all illegal hoardings in the city within two months.
