BENGALURU: More than 1,000 schools have discriminated against students who have got admission under the Right to Education (RTE) quota in 2016. The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KCPCR) has received 1,000 plus complaints from parents of RTE students regarding their child being discriminated at schools.

The complaints range from charging an additional fee to making the RTE students sit separately. The commission authorities said they are taking each complaint seriously and are issuing notices to schools.

Speaking to Express commission chairperson Kripa Alva said, “The number of complaints that we are receiving against schools for discriminating students admitted under the RTE is increasing and we are taking action against them.”

According to the commission, notices have been served to schools against which complaints are filed. “It is a normal process that once we register a complaint, we need to issue them a notice seeking an explanation. In the next step we call them for hearing, where we decide the penalty or recommend action to the concerned authorities like the Education department,” explained another official.
