Now, hunt on for STPs to clean up lake

The Urban Development Department (UDD) plans to identify one or two Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) to treat sewage water from apartments and industries around Bellandur Lake.

BENGALURU:  The Urban Development Department (UDD) plans to identify one or two Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) to treat sewage water from apartments and industries around Bellandur Lake. This move was prompted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order prohibiting discharge of untreated water into the lake.

Additional Chief Secretary Mahendra Jain held a meeting with representatives of all civic bodies on Friday and went through the order and directions of NGT in detail.

Civic agencies will seek clarifications on directions it felt were difficult to comply with and also seek an extension of time to clean up the lake. An affidavit regarding this will be filed at the next hearing on May 18.

Jain said, “We thought it is best to go back to NGT wherever there are practical difficulties in implementing the directions.

We can notify certain STPs for apartments and industries but it is not possible to do the same for the sewage that comes from the small drains which is of huge quantity. We need more time to solve this.”
