Minor boy dies in wall collapse while trying to rescue auto driver in Bengaluru

Abdul Karim was standing next to the BBMP wall at Johnson market to escape the rain when it collapsed on him. 12-year-old Zaman Raza rushed to his help when the wall collapsed him too.

BENGALURU: A minor boy lost his life while trying to rescue an auto driver on whom a BBMP wall came crashing down in Johnson Market on Sunday evening.

Sadly, no one came to his rescue after the incident, fearing formalities at police station, even as his brother Ali kept pleading for help.

Before death, Zaman Raza (12), a student of class six at a private school in Neelasandra, made a heroic attempt to save the life of the auto driver, but in vain. The driver died on the spot.

Abdul Karim (47), a resident of Austin Town, was standing next to the BBMP wall in Johnson Market to escape the rain.

Police sources said Zaman was returning from evening namaz with Ali when the siblings saw the wall gradually collapsing on Karim. Both rushed to his rescue but the wall completely caved in before they could push or drag the auto driver to safety. While Ali escaped unhurt, Zaman succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital at 10:30 am on Monday.

“He would have been alive had the local shopkeepers come forward to extricate him from under the debris immediately. It took almost 20 minutes for Ali to take brother Zaman and Abdul out of the debris and shift them to a hospital. Just a few passersby lent him a helping hand,” said father Abbas, who works as a driver with an app-based cab firm.

“My son was only trying to save another man’s life,” he added.
Zaman, who was critical, was shifted to three different hospitals. “But despite all our attempts, we could not save his life,” said the father.

Zaman was the fourth child among five of Fibtain Abbas and Ishrat Batul couple.

Ashoknagar police have registered a case of an unnatural death and investigation is on. “A report will also be submitted to the BBMP,” police said.
