48 mm rain in 30 mins and it’s chaos in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Motorists bore the brunt of sudden showers recorded on Friday evening, resulting in inundation of several areas in central business district (CBD) of the city.

The downpour of about 48 mm rainfall recorded within a span of half an hour in Lalbagh and 45 mm at Palace Guttahalli, resulted in traffic congestion.

Cars submerged

People in two cars, who had ignored traffic signs while enter ing the underpass at K R Circle, had to be rescued by the locals, as water entered the cars as they drove into the underpass.

In the first incident, a car was rescued by Fire Service personnel and locals, after they were stuck in the underpass during the rainfall. Rajanna, a resident of BTM Layout, his wife and driver were returning from Yeshwantpur in the car when the incident occurred.

In another incident, a car got stuck at the same spot. Chandru S, a resident of Jayanagar near Ashoka Pillar said that he had not seen the barricade put up against entering the underpass.

“As soon as I entered the underpass, I tried to stop. However, water had entered the car by then,” he said. His car was pulled out by the Forest Division personnel of BBMP.A tree fell on a car and bus near UB City during the heavy showers. BBMP helpline, following the downpour had received over 40 complaints of trees or branches falling.Apart from it, there were complaints of water entering houses in Anepalya 5th cross and Maruthi Nagar 2nd cross. Water also entered Nayana Auditorium on JC Road.Traffic jams were also seen in several junctions of CBD, including Nrupatunga Road, Corporation Junction and others.  

Power outage

The showers also resulted in faulty feeders, according to BESCOM’s twitter page, resulting in power disruptions in several parts of the city.The highest rainfall in the city and the state, 73.5 mm was recorded in Doddabidarakallu in Bengaluru North taluk.Apart from parts of Bengaluru Urban district, moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru rural districts. Small pockets of Vijayapura, Kalaburagi and Dakshina Kannada districts too received rainfall.
