When it rains, it pours

Rains wreaked havoc in the IT city over the last two days. Houses and roads were inundated, trees uprooted and power cuts lasted for hours

BENGALURU: Already battered by heavy rain over the last two days, Bengaluru can expect normal life to be affected in the next five days too with the meteorological department forecasting more showers in the region.

Bengaluru city, which recorded heavy rainfall on Saturday too, saw a recurrence of the civic problems the city faces after every downpour. As of 9 pm on Saturday, the highest rainfall of 79 mm was recorded at Basavanagudi.

Warning on flooding
As per the IMD forecast, rainfall in the region is expected to be fairly widespread. This could be a cause for concern among residents in several low-lying areas of the city.
According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell (KSNDMC), there are 174 low-lying areas prone to flooding in BBMP limits. Almost all the areas witnessed some flooding as the average rainfall in the city was about 50 mm, said G S Srinivasa Reddy, Director, KSNDMC.

He added that an alert was issued for low-lying areas on Friday at 2.30 pm about heavy rainfall. Despite this, several low-lying areas adjacent to storm-water drains were flooded.
He said that the current spell of rainfall is due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal. “The depression has moved towards the Visakhapatnam coast.

If it dissipates in the next two days, it will not affect the progress of monsoons,” he added. Several residents in some parts of the city spent a sleepless night on Friday after rain water flooded their houses, adding to their woes.

The BBMP zonal control rooms received complaints of water entering homes in Neelasandra, Bilekahalli, Kodichikkanahalli, Hongasandra, Kothanur Dinne, J P Nagar 5th Phase, Arekere and R T Nagar. The city also witnessed power outages for long hours. About 70 trees were uprooted with 32 in the BBMP East zone alone.
