Citizens complain of power cuts, BESCOM says there’s no shortage

Many localities across north Bengaluru and some areas in south and east have been facing unscheduled power cuts every day.

BENGALURU: Many localities across north Bengaluru and some areas in south and east have been facing unscheduled power cuts every day. The affected areas include Jayanagar, Kammanahalli, R T Nagar, Sanjaynagar, Yelahanka and others.

While Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has not officially announced any load-shedding, residents complain of power cuts several times in a day. “Every morning there is  a power cut for 20 minutes to half an hour around 9am. This has been happening for past two weeks,” said Shaila R, a resident of Sahakarnagar near Hebbal.

“There have been regular power cuts of half-an-hour to 45 minutes every day, sometimes late in the night too. Our daily routine is affected,” said retired high court official M Srinivas who is a resident of Mathikere.

“Power cuts are a daily occurrence in my area. In fact, power outages last for hours every other day, sometimes for as long as two hours. And when we call the BESCOM helpline, most of the times they have no clue about the power cuts,” said Shreeja Moktan, analyst at ANZ, a resident of Kammanahalli.

However, officials maintain there is no shortage of power and that the demand is lesser than supply. “Our short-term power purchase is providing us with enough power. There is surplus generation in other states which can be procured if needed. The demand is 4,200 MW per day while supply is 4,500 MW,” BESCOM Managing Director P Rajendra Cholan claimed.
