BENGALURU: Locating an address in Bengaluru will now get much simpler. In a first such initiative in the country, all houses and buildings in Bengaluru will get unique Digital Identification Number (DIN) in the next two weeks. The unique ID would make it convenient to locate the property easily by using Google maps.

BBMP has over 93,000 roads and each road has been given a unique number. In 2013, BBMP launched Geographic Information System (GIS) based Property Identification (PID) number project which is nothing but a combination of ward number, street number and property numbers. As part of the project, every street in Bengaluru was given a unique number.

Using the same data, BBMP in association with KEONICS has developed a mobile application. “People who download this app on their phone can navigate to any house using the unique DIN given to that particular house. The DIN will be a combination of alphabets and numerics and it will have nine digits,’’ a senior BBMP official told The New Indian Express.

The official said the nine digits will replace the entire traditional address format. “This will be useful for those who use app-based taxis, courier service, food delivery firms and more. Just one number, and one will get the particular latitudinal and longitudinal coordinate point. More importantly, it will be useful for emergency services like fire and ambulance services.

If it is an apartment complex or a building with multiple floors, each floor or flat will be given subsection numbers,” the official said.  The DINs are also expandable. For instance, if a building has three floors, each floor will have a unique number. If at a later stage, another floor is constructed, an additional number can be added.

On Tuesday, at the BBMP Council, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said the mobile application will be ready in another 15 days. Using this, every house will get a unique DIN.

What’s The Din Code?
DIN is a combination of alphanumerics.
Since it is GIS enabled, each number (each property) will have latitudinal and longitudinal coordinate points.
No two DINs will be the same.
Ideal for app-based taxi, delivery based food joints and courier services.
Best suited for emergency services like ambulance and fire brigade.
