BENGALURU: Just hours after Hollywood actress Alyssa Milano took to Twitter asking people to write ‘me too’ in response to her tweet if they were victims of sexual assault or harassment, social media came alive with responses. Women from various walks of life spoke about the issue. While some women chose to word their posts about sexual harassment and abuse, others shared spine chilling stories about the experiences they had.
The movement started in response to the Harvey Weinstein case and its fall out.
“If all women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem. If you have been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet,” wrote Milano. Social media was abuzz with tweets about the ordeal that women face at workplaces, public transport and also at home.
A post by Facebook user Radha Bhongale read, “Every girl you’ve known has faced cases of harassment in varying degrees. But how many do you know who have been the perpetrators? We’ve taken a roll call of the victims but if we try a little harder, outside of our world of hashtags, maybe we’ll find the source of the problems too and take accountability of them, where needed.”
Men also took to social media to stand in support of women.
“It’s more sickening to know that for every #metoo there are equal or more number of people amongst us who have molested/harassed/raped someone,” wrote Prasad Bhat, another social media user.
