BENGALURU: In what appears to be a suspected case of honour killing, the man, whose beheaded body was found near Electronics City on Sunday, may have been murdered by relatives of a woman whom he had reportedly impregnated. On Friday morning, cops arrested the girl’s brothers Gandhi Jarai (18) and Madhu Jarai (19) for killing, beheading and bobbitising Daranji Manjhi, from Hulimavu.

Cousin Kashiram (30), the main accused in the case, is in Odisha’s Kendujhar district, and efforts are on to nab him. Police said that the Jarai brothers and their sister Savitra (24) were staying in a room at Electronics City. They worked at Sai Garments in the same locality. In March this year, Daranji Manjhi (28), also from Kendujhar, moved in with them. Over time, Savitra and Manjhi became intimate and Savitra got pregnant. Jarai brothers were unaware of it.

In July, Savitra experienced pain in her stomach and hence left for Kendujhar. When the main accused Kashiram took his cousin to doctors in the village, it was revealed that she was pregnant. This led to ostracisation of Savitra’s family in Kendujhar. The fact that Savitra and Maaji were from different castes added to the outrage, and led Kashiram to plot revenge against Manjhi, the details of which he shared with Gandhi. Kashiram arrived in the city on Sunday afternoon with a rod and a knife. On Sunday evening, Kashiram, Manjhi and the Jarai brothers consumed alcohol at a bar in Electronics City, and then took Manjhi to an isolated eucalyptus grove on the pretext of drinking more alcohol.

When Manjhi bent his head to drink, Kashiram hit him with the rod, after which Gandhi too hit Manjhi on the head, killing him. Madhu was told of the plan only a few minutes before the incident. On Kashiram’s bidding, Madhu took pictures of the act and Gandhi bobbitised and beheaded Manjhi’s body. They threw away Manjhi head, his genitals and knife in a nearby lake. Police said they were able to track the culprits as they found Manjhi phone. The Jarai brothers confessed to their crime.
