BENGALURU: City-based entrepreneurs Vijay Tata and Amrita Tata launched New India, a charitable trust on Wednesday and donated `200 crore to it for building a free cancer hospital for the underprivileged. Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi was present in the city for the launch. The couple decided to set up the hospital on the occasion of their daughter’s birthday.

“The couple has been sheltering 40 kids for six years and the dream got bigger to give back to society, which gave birth to New India,” a statement said. “It aims to cater to women, children, treat critical illness and bring justice to rape victims and help them resurrect their lives,” it read.

The couple has pledged 50 acres of land worth `100 crores in Attibele-Anekal Road to the trust. Additional `100 crore will be used towards construction of the super-specialty cancer care hospital. All underprivileged cancer patients from across India will be treated free of charge. The hospital will be 150-bedded and will be completed in different phases. It will have state-of-the-art infrastructure with renowned oncologists and consultants. The hospital will be designed by a UK-based Architect and Engineering firm, BDP.
