KEA directed to allow OCI students apply for CET
Bengaluru: PROVIDING some relief to Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) students, the Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) to permit them to submit offline applications for the 2018 CET undergraduate engineering course. Justice B V Nagarathna passed an interim order to this effect after hearing a batch of petitions filed by one Sujit Virupaksha and others. The petitioners were directed to submit offline applications on or before February 26, the deadline fixed for submitting applications. 

State govt gets notice on allotment of sites
Bengaluru: A resident of Cubbonpet in the city has moved the Karnataka High Court seeking directions to the state government and Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) to define ‘public life’ in relation to allotment of sites to persons in ‘public life’ under the discretionary quota.  Hearing a PIL filed by K Bhojappa, a division bench of Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice S Sunil Dutt Yadav ordered notice to the state government and the KHB in this regard.  Bhojappa also pointed out the absence of guidelines for selection of allottees under ‘persons in public life’ category.

Notice to excise dept on environmental hazard label
Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered notice to the Excise Department on a public interest litigation against the state government for introducing polyester-based ‘excise adhesive label’ in place of paper-based label for Indian Made Foreign Liquor. A division bench of justices H G Ramesh and B M Shyam Prasad ordered the notice after hearing a petition filed by NGO Swachha and social worker Ramprasad.   The petitioners contended that polyester labels are environment hazards and non-biodegradable.

Issue notification on linguistic status, Centre told
Bengaluru: THE Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered the Union government to issue notification by March 14 on grant of linguistic minority status to educational institutions in Karnataka after holding deliberations on a report submitted by the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities. Justice B V Nagarathna issued this direction on petitions seeking directions to the Centre to exclude them from the purview of reservation of 25%seats under the Right to Education Act, by extending linguistic minority status based on the Justice Misra report. 

Manual scavenging deaths: Notice to state, Centre
Bengaluru: THE Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered notice to the state and Centre in response to public interest litigation seeking directions to implement the law relating to prevention of manual scavenging.  Hearing PIL filed by the High Court Legal Services Committee, a division bench also ordered notice to the BBMP and BWSSB.  Advocate K Sheela Aneesh told the court that 68 people died in last one decade while cleaning sewerage pipes and toilets in Karnataka alone. This does not include hundreds who must died due to related illnesses, she said.
