BENGALURU: A gang of three men barged into a farmhouse and raped a 26-year-old woman near Kudur in Ramanagara taluk on Saturday night. Police nabbed the prime accused soon after the incident came to light. The accused are friends of the victim’s husband.

A senior police officer said the victim, a housewife, lives with her six-year-old son while her husband Vijay (name changed), who is a truck driver, is out on work. Around 10.30pm, the accused Karadi Gangaraju alias Kuruda, Manjunath and Purushotham, all aged around 25-30 years, came to the house on the pretext of asking for Vijay’s mobile number. They also reportedly said that a police sub-inspector had asked them to bring him to the station over a property dispute. She opened the window and asked them to come in the morning as her husband was away.

They waited for a while and then broke open the door, barged inside the house and thrashed her before locking her son in a room. She tried to raise an alarm, but they gagged her with tape before allegedly raping her and fleeing. After a while, she regained consciousness and alerted her neighbour Gangamma who called the police and rushed her to a private hospital where she is recovering.

Kudur police, along with a senior police officer, visited the hospital and recorded her statement. Based on a tip-off, Gangaraju was nabbed from his house, but the two other accused are still at large.

Victim attempts suicide

The victim’s mother told reporters that her daughter attempted suicide on regaining consciousness. “As her son was shouting from inside the room, she decided to alert her neighbours and the police about the incident. Her husband is away since the last one month due to a family dispute. The accused, who knew about this, barged into the house and raped her,” the mother said. The victim’s husband is still not aware of the incident.

Preliminary probe revealed that the accused had a birthday party at a nearby bar and then came to the farmhouse. They also allegedly tried to kidnap the woman, but as she raised an alarm, they pushed her inside the room.
