BENGALURU:Following widespread protests by students of University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) against private varsities offering agricultural courses, the state government is likely to amend the Karnataka State Agricultural Universities Act.

Agriculture Minister N H Shivashankar Reddy said that following the controversy, a proposal will be submitted to the Higher Education Department to amend the existing laws to prevent private varsities from offering agricultural courses. The department has also been requested to formulate rules to penalise any varsity that violates the existing rules, he said.

BJP MLC N Ravikumar said that though the private Rai Technology University in Doddaballapur was set up under Karnataka State Private University Act, it was not granted permission from Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to offer agriculture courses. “The college has failed to follow any guideline regarding the number of students or donation,” he said.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said that though the varsity had approached ICAR three years ago, ICAR had not taken a decision on the matter. They had appealed to ICAR as the varsities cannot be affiliated to any university, he noted.Reddy added that the state will also look at ways to repatriate the students who had studied in the private varsity so that their future is not affected,he added.
