Gold foil worth Rs 11.83 lakh seized at KIA 

Customs  officials at the Kempegowda International Airport on Thursday recovered gold foil worth`11.83 lakh wrapped on chocolates and chewing gums from the check-in baggage of a passenger.

BENGALURU: Customs  officials at the Kempegowda International Airport on Thursday recovered gold foil worth`11.83 lakh wrapped on chocolates and chewing gums from the check-in baggage of a passenger who arrived from Bahrain. 

According to an official release, the total quantity of gold recovered was 384.10 grams. Rauf Kattakal, a resident of Kasargod in Kerala, the owner of the bag, has been taken into custody. The release said dark images revealed while scanning the bag made the officials open the wrapped chocolates. “This is a new modus operandi adopted by smugglers to bring in the yellow metal. It has not been witnessed earlier at the Bengaluru airport,” the release added. Further investigations are on.
