BENGALURU: In a shocking incident, a senior medical officer at Victoria Hospital has been accused of making a gender-insensitive remark. Around 20 nurses working in the hospital’s Emergency and Trauma Care Centre have complained to the Dean of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), which the hospital is affiliated to, against their hospital’s special officer.

The officer was allegedly irked by the fact that the in-charge casualty staff nurse had asked him if she could provide some files that the Dean had requested for inspection. The nurses’ complaint letter quotes the officer as retorting: “Don’t you have any shame? If a minister asks me to rape two staff nurses tomorrow, will you agree to that? Because he is a minister, you won’t refuse; shame on you!”

The complaint, signed by at least 20 nurses, has gone viral on several nursing groups on WhatsApp. The letter to the Dean, a copy of which is with The New Indian Express, is also undersigned by the president of Karnataka State Government Nurses Association (KSGNA) Byramma and vice-president Leela K P.

The in-charge staff nurse, in her complaint, alleged that one Dr Madhusudhan had come to her on Thursday morning requesting her to give certain files for inspection by 2 pm that day. She had gone to the special officer’s cabin to take his permission where Dr Mahesh, casualty-in-charge doctor, was present in the chamber along with one Ramesh from linen supply and the nurse’s colleague Hemanth.

“His (the special officer’s) remarks caused mental trauma to me,” the complainant wrote. The accused officer did not respond to calls or messages from TNIE. BMCRI Dean Dr H S Sathish said, “Several nurses came to meet me on Saturday and informed me that the special officer scolded her. He is on leave and will be available on Monday. I have to conduct an inquiry before commenting on the issue.”

Leela KP, Vice President, KSGNA, told TNIE, “If the officer had a problem with sending the records, he should have told the nurse to ask Dr Madhusudan to meet him and should have dealt with him on his own. This is no way to talk to a female employee. We met the dean and he assured us that he will conduct an inquiry and talk to the officer, and has asked us to meet him at 3.30 pm on Monday.”
