Double-decker buses put on back-burner

Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is rethinking about inducting open-roofed double-decker buses in its existing fleet.

BENGALURU: Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is rethinking about inducting open-roofed double-decker buses in its existing fleet.

BMTC in June 2017 had approved a proposal to buy five double-decker buses from Pune. These buses were a common sight in in the city but were eventually phased out in the late nineties. BMTC Managing Director V Ponnuraj on Monday said the corporation felt the need of detailed discussions on inducting double-decker buses into the fleet. Narrow lanes and overhead cables had forced BMTC to rethink the viability of operating double-decker buses in the city.

Travel in electric buses soon
Ponnuraj said BMTC will operate electric buses by October end. With government releasing money next week, BMTC in first phase will hire five buses for the next three months. Eventually, BMTC will operate a fleet of 80 electric vehicles.

Uniformity in colour code
Barring Vajra (air conditioned buses), BMTC intends to implement an uniform colour white and blue for all buses in its fleet. All buses with orange and green will be re-painted white and blue. The electric buses will remain distinctive with a white.
