Around the world in games

BENGALURU : Sometimes in Pokemon, there are battles which you have to win in order to get a flute to move that sleeping Snorlax out of that one path that will get me to a cooler city. I consider the debate of “too many violent video games” the Snorlax blocking my path. In a continuing range of unsuccessful attempts to show a large range of really wacky pacifist video games and completely put the debate of violent video games to rest, here’s another list of games from across the world (that don’t feature guns):

Russian Subway Dogs
No more than a simple arcade game, but inspired by actual stray dogs in Russia who’ve figured out how to access the subway. The developers have clearly researched on the Russian stereotypes — so it includes running away from elks and battling Babushkas.

Total War Rome 2
Yes, I know it says “war” in the title, but it’s not some violent gory game with guns (the game makes the list on a mere technicality that there’s swords and canons instead). Set across Italy, this strategy game is releasing a prequel ‘Rise of the Republic’ and an ‘Ancestral update’ — which lets you build alliances and manipulate characters in an interactive family tree.

Maldita Castilla
Like Total War, this technically has no guns — but it made to this list because of the heavy medieval art influence from Spain, and the mid-80s graphics and sound. Also, it’s a free-to-play action platformer with over 6 six levels and cool bosses to beat.

Evoland
Evoland is a French game (the first version took 48 hours to develop!) looks at tracing out the history of video game development — from simple pixels to more complex 2D graphics. The game captures the entire range of graphics between a Pokemon Crystal and Pokemon X & Y in its multiple levels.

Demolition Company
Given the large developer base in Germany, you’d still be hard-pressed to find a completely German based game. Since I enjoy plugging in simulator recommendations into the column, this extremely satisfying destruction simulator by a German Indie developer is a great find.
Non-gun game developers, may your tribe increase!
