BENGALURU : Priests and astrologers from  all across Karnataka will come together to take part in a state-level cricket tournament to be held on July 28 and 29 in Mysuru. Nearly 2,000 people from across the state will be part of the event. Prizes will be distributed on July 29. About 16 teams will take part in the tournament, including teams from Bengaluru, Haveri, Shivamogga and Tumakuru.  The trophy was released by actor Sudeep recently in Bengaluru.  This being the month of Aashada, it is considered less auspicious to host any function, as per the age-old tradition. Making the best use of their time, they have come together and decided to play a cricket tournament.

Sugun, a player, says: “Normally, priests do not have time to engage in fitness, as they have to start their religious duties quite early in the morning and we spend long hours sometimes during homas or special pujas. This event will provide a break from regular duties.” The group has also appointed a coach to train them. They also have a team uniform for the event. “This is also an occasion to mingle with priests from other districts and share our knowledge,” adds Sarpabhushana Swamy, another team member.

The cricket league is the brainchild of Dr Madhu Dixit of Sri Mykara Gurukula. “While police, media and celebrities come together to play cricket, I thought, holding a cricket league for priests will be a good idea. From next year, we are planning to host the tournament during Aashada month in each district.”
“Priests/astrologers from various communities such as Shaivas, Veerashaivas, Brahmins, Lingayats will all come together to battle it out for the title,” he adds.
