MADIKERI: The cries of elephant herd filled the air of Seegehosuru village on Tuesday after an elephant calf got stuck in a dugout elephant trench.

Two elephant calves and two adult elephants had shrewdly laid foot on a huge rock lying in the elephant trench and crossed the forest to reach the farms at Seegehosuru. After feasting on the crops at the farm, the herd was heading back to Banavara Reserve Forest, when one of the calves fell into a trench. While the calf cried to be rescued, the adults trumpeted, trying to pull the calf out.

Alerted by the cries, the forest officials visited the spot and tried to help the calf with the help of villagers. The rescue team was chased by the adult elephants, yet the officials succeeded in their efforts to pull the calf out. The mission was led by Somwarpet forest official Lakshmi Kanth along with other forest staff.
