Helpful dads make happy moms: Survey

BENGALURU : Even as the world celebrates fatherhood, father-children outings and the exchange of gifts on Father’s Day, Fathers, use this day to pause and introspect on the role you play and the contribution you make to the family. According to findings of the survey conducted by Mompresso on the happiness index of moms, it was revealed that a helpful father leads to a happy mom. The survey was conducted amongst a sample size of 1218 mothers in the country, with a key focus on Urban Mothers in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. In Bengaluru, 121 mothers took part.

According to the survey statistics: zero per cent fathers are primarily responsible for PTMs, projects, home works, and exams; 41.8% fathers expressed appreciation to the mothers for something they did for the family; 39.1 per cent mothers strongly agree that their husbands stand by them with respect to kids. Further, the results of the survey  revealed that 44% of all the unhappy mothers have not been appreciated by their spouses in the last one year.

Vishal Gupta, co-founder and CEO of Mompresso, a user-generated content platform for women says, “Life has got much more complicated for mothers, who are doing so many things. Mothers are more involved in doctor’s visit or school work, as compared to the dads. Even if you look at household chores, mums spend approximately three hours-making their day chockablock.”As a word of advice to husbands, he says that if husbands free some time for their wives, that can be of help to the family in the long run.

Saumya Agarwal, a software engineer and a mother of a seven-year-old says that the responsibilities of bringing up their child are equally shared between the couple. “In India, traditionally it is seen that husbands don’t help with the household chores and bringing up the kids. Now, the trend is changing, guys are coming forward and helping their wives. This cultivates a good habit in the kids also. It also brings out a factor of respect in the family,” she adds.

However, not all mothers in the city have supportive husbands  when it comes to sharing  responsibilities of the child. Maria De Rosario, mother of a three-year-old child faces the challenges of bringing up the child alone, as her husband is based abroad. She single-handedly manages her son with the help of her mother. Maria says, “ It is very important for the husband to be supportive, especially when it comes to giving the mom the kinds of break they need at some point.

A happy mom is one who gets to have a break, go out and rejuvenate. When she is doing the same thing for an extended period of time, she loses out on patience. And when you constantly keep doing things on your own, you feel low. You feel like you don’t have that additional person who can share things. Even the mom’s confidence is on a higher level when she has her husband there supporting her.”
