BENGALURU: Observing that a reply submitted by the BBMP Commissioner is merely an eyewash, the Karnataka High Court slammed the Commissioner for submitting a vague reply with regard to implementation of the provisions of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978.

While pulling up the then BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad with regard to the contempt petition filed by Gau Gyan Foundation for not implementing the Acts, a division bench of Justice Raghvendra S Chauhan and Justice H T Narendra Prasad directed him to inform the court about the number of slaughterhouses operating in the eight BBMP zones on or before June 29, 2018.

The Commissioner, however, has filed his reply explaining the steps taken to comply with the court directions and said there was no intentional violation of orders; therefore, no contempt was made. To this, the court said: “Surprisingly, the reply submitted by the Commissioner was bereft of any concrete details, and was merely a vague statement made to take this court for a ride.”

The court also directed the Commissioner of Police T Suneel Kumar to submit relevant data relating to the  same issue.
