A 19-year-old boy committed suicide at KG Halli on Saturday night after his parents advised him to quit chewing tobacco.

BENGALURU: A 19-year-old boy committed suicide at KG Halli on Saturday night after his parents advised him to quit chewing tobacco. The deceased is Asifullah S M, a college dropout who was working in a fabric factory.

A senior police officer said the incident took place when his parents had gone to their relative’s house to celebrate Eid. Around 8.30pm, when they returned, they found him hanging and alerted the KG Halli police.

“Asifullah’s father Abdul SM, an employee in a garment store, stated to the police that his son was addicted to tobacco since a few years and had been advised to quit it. He had an argument with his parents over this and stayed back when they left home. However, he left no suicide note,” the police added.

The police have advised that people should consider getting in touch with the helpline: 080-25497777- SAHAI Helpline for suicide prevention and emotional distress, which is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm.
