This year on, English is must for engineering students

BENGALURU: It is now mandatory for students joining undergraduate engineering courses in the state for the academic year 2018-19 to study English language as a subject. Considering the lack of communication skills in engineering students even after graduation, Visvesvaraya Technological  University (VTU) has decided to make English language mandatory for first and second semesters from the current academic year. This was decided at the joint board meeting of the university. It will be a practical subject where students will have their classes in computer labs.

According to VTU officials, a software-based module has been designed to help students learn the language. “It is not basic English. The classes have been designed to improve the communication skills of students since many lose placement opportunities due to the lack of it,” VTU vice chancellor Dr Karisiddappa said. The classes will be held for two hours every week.

Karisiddappa added that this is introduced as per a circular issued by the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD) asking all universities to introduce courses in humanities. It will be a credit-based subject where two credits will be given to students - one in each semester. The modules have been designed by senior faculty members of the university and placement officers. The affiliated colleges have been asked to hire English teachers. This decision has been welcomed by students as well as faculty members.

A student said, “This will help students like me who are from rural background. I can take theory exams and score high marks, but when it  comes to communication it is difficult to compete with other students.”
Prof Ravishankar, placement officer of BMS College of Engineering, said, “This will definitely boost confidence among students as well as improve their communication skills. During placements, companies prefer those with good communication skills.”

Kannada is a hit
Kannada language which was made mandatory at the third semester engineering courses following recommendation by Kannada Development Authority has turned out to be a huge hit. Even non-Kannadiga students are happy with the credit course which is helping communicate while they are living in the state.
