Parents protest in front of school over steep fee hike

Hundreds of parents gathered in front of a private school located at Ullal near Kengeri on Saturday morning to condemn the sudden hike in tuition fees by the school authorities.

BENGALURU: Hundreds of parents gathered in front of a private school located at Ullal near Kengeri on Saturday morning to condemn the sudden hike in tuition fees by the school authorities.

According to parents, the school has issued a notification asking them to pay `6,500 per month as tuition fee, which was `2,500 during the previous academic year. “Increasing the fee all of a sudden is a real burden on us and we demand that the school management revisit the decision and continue with last year’s fee structure,” said the parents.

Meanwhile, they alleged that when they condemned the fee hike, the management told the parents that some facilities may be stopped. When the protest was intensified by the parents, Block Education Officer (BEO), South (4) arrived and verified things. After talking to the parents, BEO Venkatesh said the school has violated the recent Fee Regulatory Guidelines.

“The school isn’t following the recent notifications issued by the Department of Primary and Secondary Education. Considering this, we have decided to submit a report to the department recommending disaffiliation of the school,” said the BEO.

As per new guidelines issued by the department, schools are allowed to increase fee only by 15% and were told that the maintenance/development fee should not be more than `2,500 per year.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Instruction has issued a notice to the school seeking explanation for the hike and has asked it to reply within three days.
