BANGALORE: In what could be a sign of things to come, thunderstorms and lightning struck the city on Monday. Dark clouds hovered above the cityscape around 5 pm and gusty winds followed, resulting in heavy rain.

According to the Meteorological Department, the city recorded an average of 20 mm rain between 6 pm and 8.30 pm, while the HAL airport area received around 30 mm.

Officials in the department said monsoon is likely to hit the city in the next two days and the thunderstorms were a precursor to this.

The sky is likely to be cloudy on Tuesday, with showers predicted in parts of the city.

Trees fell in RT Nagar, Dollar’s Colony,  Shivajinagar, Jayanagar 4th Block, Hulimavu, Vijaya Bank Colony, Gayatri Nagar, at Mekhri Circle, Indian Express Circle, on Cubbon Road, Lavelle Road, JC Road, Bannerghatta Road, Queen’s Road and near Sriram Mandir in Rajajinagar.

Power supply was disrupted in many parts of the city, with BESCOM receiving 1,187 complaints between 7 pm and 9 pm. However, only 10 cases were resolved by 9 pm.
