Understanding of god

Music and god are synonymous with each other. Since I am musically inclined, I associate spirituality with music. Though the concept of god has always been difficult to comprehend, I would say I find god in those who care for me — my parents, teachers, friends and well-wishers. There are a few who love me for what I am and celebrate my success as theirs. I am grateful to have them in my life and I thank god for it.

Spiritual beliefs

Silence is a source of power. It is the foundation of music and it is music itself. There is a saying, “After silence, which comes nearest to expressing the inexplicable, is music”. I believe that. I also believe music is one of the ways to reach god.

Spiritual practices

Love and laugh — these are the main things I follow. I strongly feel people unnecessarily confuse spirituality with a detached, emotionless life. But being happy and spreading cheer is the best form of spiritual practice.

What does being religious mean to you?

I believe in idol worship and visiting temples gives me a positive vibration. I think being secular is the need of the hour. So I would rather be secular than religious.

If you got a chance to play god, what would you change?

I would ask Ram, Allah and Jesus to let people know that they never created religion. They only created values and traditions which have been absolutely made a mockery of in the name of religion for personal/specific group benefits.

Take on miracles

If you believe in miracles, they will happen to you.

Pilgrimage sites

I love visiting ancient historical sites and temples that are antediluvian. To me, the older the idol the more powerful it is. I have immense respect for all those temples that don’t force you to shell out money for a glimpse of god. A few of my favourites are Puttaparthi, Ekambareswarar temple (Kanchipuram) and Chilkur Balaji temple near Hyderabad.

(MK Balaji is a singer and television presenter)
