Boys continue streak, bag top spots

Girls might outdo boys in the Class XII examination results but when it comes to engineering admissions, the latter still seem to rule. In a trend that has seen further consolidation this year, the number of boys who have scored 200/200 in the Anna University rank list has far outnumbered the girls, with only one girl making it to the top 10.

Statistics released here on Saturday revealed that of the 32 students who have scored full marks in the rank list, 26 were boys. While a similar trend was seen last year, officials say the figures this year has further strengthened the trend. “Last year, of the total 88 people who scored 200, the break-up was 47 boys and 41 girls. But this time, the ratio is completely in favour of boys with 26 scoring 200,” said V Rhymend Uthiaraj, Secretary of ‘TNEA 2012’.

Among the top 10 candidates for the single-window counselling, statistics revealed nine were boys. S Iswarya from Namakkal, who secured 5th rank, was the only girl in the top 10. Rhymend said with 32 candidates scoring full score, 16 pairs of random numbers were used to break the tie.

Data revealed that of the 1.75 lakh applicants, about 85,000 were from backward class communities. The break-up for the MBC, SC, ST and OC was 44,000, 22,171, 540, and 11,710 respectively. Incidentally, over 85,000 candidates have claimed the first generation concession.

Releasing the rank list, Additional Chief Secretary to Government (Higher Education), T S Sridhar, said E Devaprasath of Tiruvannamalai secured the first rank followed by K Sivakumar of Vellore. Among SC candidates, S Sabhari Haran from Tiruchy secured the top slot with a score of 199.75 whereas K Sridevi from Chennai occupied the first rank in among ST students.

Sridhar said 504 colleges will take part in single-window counselling to be held between July 13 and August 18. Of the 2.51 lakh seats available, 1.59 lakh seats have been given to the counselling by the institutions. The number of management quota seats this year would be 80,000 seats, he said.

Rhymend added that the rank list and counselling schedule has already been published at www.annauniv.edu/tnea2012.

Candidates can get details of ranks and dates of counselling, along with information about any issues with their applications, when they key in the application number on the website. In case of any discrepancy, they can mail tneaenq@annauniv.edu or call (044)22358265/ 66/ 67.

Meanwhile, counselling for sports quota will begin on July 5, and certificate verification for the quota will start on July 2.
