Leaders hail Thackeray’s role; Rajini terms him father figure

Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray’s politics of identity was hailed by almost all parties across the spectrum in the Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

In his condolence message, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi said Thackeray launched the Shiv Sena with development of Marathi people as the sole motivation. Recalling his meeting with him in 1968 in Mumbai, Karunanidhi said despite differences in ideas, Bal Thackeray came and met him personally in the hotel the DMK leader was put up and interacted with him for a long time. “His affection impressed me,” Karunanidhi said.

Speaking to Express over the phone, CPI leader D Raja said Thackeray had an important place in Maharashtra politics. Despite ideological differences, Raja said he recognised the importance he had in Maharashtra. “His demise will have a profound impact on Shiv Sena,” he said.

BJP State leader Pon Radhakrishnan described Thackeray a person who had always acted with the intention to protect the country’s tradition and culture.

In a statement circulated through SMS, actor Rajinikanth, who had met the Sena chief personally many times in Mumbai, said Bal Thackeray was a great leader and a father figure to him and many others.
