Electrician found dead at Ashok Nagar Metro site

The body of a young man was found at a construction site of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) near Ashok Pillar on Monday.

Police said the deceased was identified as Lingeswaran (28), a native of Rameshwaram, who had come to Chennai last year to work as an electrician. Staff at the site informed police after discovering the body on Monday.

The Ashok Nagar police registered a case and the body was sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital.

Meanwhile, CMRL officials denied reports that Lingeswaran was working with the company.

Jewels Seized at Airport Customs officers at Chennai Airport seized four diamonds and 30 precious stones worth Rs 9.5 lakh from a Sri Lankan national who landed in Chennai. According to a release, M S Mohammad Safwan, who was arrested, had concealed the contraband in his rectum.

Customs sources said intelligence officials have been monitoring the passengers, who had arrived on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight.

During a check that was done on him, he confessed that he was carrying valuables in a pouch in his  rectum.

The pouch contained four diamonds weighing four cents and 30 blue and yellow sapphire stones, weighing 174 carats.

2 Held for Stealing Container

The city police on Monday arrested two persons for allegedly stealing a container carrying copper mixer pieces worth Rs 7.15 lakh from the Chennai Port using fake documents.

They were identified as Balachander of Vimco Nagar, Ernavur and Vadivelu of Ennore.

Police said the duo had taken help from harbour employees to prepare fake documents. They changed the registration number of the heavy vehicle carrying the container and kept it at a steel yard in Santhangadu.

The police arrested them after receiving a complaint from a Manali-based company, which handled the freight.
