A 22-year-old woman on Friday sought the help of city police commissioner S George for protection from male members of her foster family who had allegedly sexually abused her.
Raji (name changed) got no help from the Chinthadripet police when she had lodged an earlier complaint on the sexual abuse.
Upset over the fact that she was adopted, the young lady also wants to trace her biological parents who reportedly deserted her as a baby. “I was told my parents were living in Dindigul,” she said.
Raji, who now stays in Kodambakkam, was found by ICWO, an NGO, which admitted her to a temporary shelter. She claimed that she was adopted soon after birth by Vinayagam and Kalliammal. Kaliammal, who was then a maid at Egmore Children’s Hospital was happy to receive the child.
Kaliammal did not leave Raji behind when she eloped with Nasser Hussain, a car driver. Raji alleged that Hussain began sexually abusing her at their home in Chinthadripet after she turned 17. Hussain reportedly told two of his kids that Raji was their step-mother.
When Raji told about the abuse to Kaliammal, she was chided and verbally abused by her foster mother. Later, she left home and stayed with an aunt, whose husband also allegedly abused her. Forced to leave again, she stayed at a ladies hostel and approached the police. The woman was subject to further harassment by an uncle when she stayed with another relative.
Raji could not pursue higher education after completing class XII because of the repeated trauma and and her limited finances.
