More than 500 differently-abled men and 180 women registered for a Swayamvaram, organised for them by the Shree Geetha Bhavan Trust in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Handicapped Federation Charitable Trust (TNHFC Trust) on Saturday.
The wedding will be held on November 1. The Swayamvaram includes a counselling session for prospective couples by lawyers, psychologists, gynaecologists and physicians before the impending nuptials.
“They might have questions they might feel shy about asking their parents. So we’ve organised the counselling sessions to help them find their footing,” said Maruti, a member of the Trust.
Applications were received from across the State and other states as well. People from different backgrounds, for whom age, caste or educational background did not matter, applied for the Swayamvaram.
Earlier the Swayamvaram was held in Cuddalore, Namakkal and Madurai with a large number of applicants turning up.
“Applications of people who didn’t get a chance to find their spouse will be redi rec ted to the next Swayamvaram. The weddings for couples from all four centres will be held in Chennai. We will host the wedding for only 30 couples at a time for lack of space. If there are more, we will conduct it on the next day,” said Maruti.
Ashok Kumar Goel, managing trustee, Shree Geetha Bhavan Trust, inaugurated the Swayamvaram along with Chidambaranathan, president of TNHFC trust.
Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraiswamy dropped in and blessed the couples during the Swayamvaram.
