3 labourers die in water tank collapse

Three labourers, including two women, working for a brick kiln owned by a Chennai-based man in a village near Vengal in Tiruvallur district died after a water tank near them collapsed on Monday evening. Police said they have registered a case of death due to negligence and were likely to arrest those responsible.

Police said Pushpa (22) of Thirukoilur, Sandhya (24) of Kodamangalam village near Ulundurpet and Malasamy (55) of Megavur village near Rajapalayam were washing clothes and taking a bath near a water tank constructed at a height of eight feet. They had completed the day’s work at the kiln located in Karanipettai village near Vengal. Around 6 pm, the concrete walls of the tank, which was filled to the brim, broke into two. While the water gushed out with force, the tank collapsed on the labourers killing them on the spot. Vengal police rushed to the spot and sent their bodies to Government Hospital in Tiruvallur for autopsy.
