Lorry driver gets jail for killing 3-year-old

A lorry driver, Gnanaprakash, was on Monday sent to prison for a year and three months and fined Rs 2,000 by the Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate for knocking down 3-year-old Hussain Banu on February 4, 2005, when she was crossing the road near Dr Ambedkar College in Pulianthope. The child died on the spot.

Based on a complaint from the girl’s father, Kilpauk Traffic Investigation police registered a case under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) of Indian Penal Code. The driver was arrested and the lorry seized.

After collecting evidence, a team of policemen led by Traffic AC Saravanan and comprising Inspector M Appadurai and Sub-Inspector Ganesan filed the charge sheet on February 28, 2005.
