Three Presidency College students who were on their way to the college in an MTC bus on Thursday morning were stabbed by a group of Pachaiyappa’s College students as the rest of the passengers watched in horror. Later in the evening, another Presidency student, waiting for a bus at the Otteri stop was stabbed by a group of students who escaped in motorcycles after the attack. Police suspect that the evening attack was carried out by Nandanam Government Arts College students.
Eyewitnesses said the 6D route bus was moving on the Tiruvottiyur High Road around 9 am when a group of 30 youngsters boarded the bus at Maharani Theatre bus stop. On spotting the Presidency College students, the mob started assaulting them with knives before other passengers could react. In the melee, two elderly women passengers also suffered minor cut injuries on their hands. “They seem to have boarded the bus only to target the Presidency students as this route was regularly used by the students to reach their college. Many of them were carrying big knives and on identifying the Presidency students, they started assaulting them. A student who was
sitting next to me was targeted and as he raised his hand to protect him, he suffered a deep cut injury on his hand,” said a student of another college who witnessed the incident.
The bus was taking the turn at the TH Road-Cemetery Road junction when the bus driver, on hearing the shouts of the passengers halted the bus. “As the bus halted, the students ran away from the spot. Enquiries revealed that the assailants belonged to Pachaiyappa’s College and it was in retaliation to an attack on Pachaiyappa’s students couple of weeks ago near New Mint bus stop,” police said.
