In a freak accident at New Washermenpet on Thursday, a five-year-old boy was run over by a bullock cart after the bull ran amok when an MTC bus hit the cart.
Police said Yogit of Arunachaleswarar Koil Street in New Washermenpet was at a wayside tender coconut shop on TH Road along with his grandfather Malaisamy on the latter’s bicycle, when the incident took place.
Around 10 am, the bullock cart laden with casuarina wood was hit by an MTC bus (route number 56) from Thiruvottiyur to Broadway.
Police said when the cart slowed down, bus driver Pandian (31), who did not notice a casuarina log protruding from the cart, rammed into it, causing the bull to run amok.
The cart then hit the bicycle, running over the boy, who got stuck in the rear wheel and suffered severe injuries. He was rushed to the Stanley Hospital, where he died. Police registered a case under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence) and arrested the cart rider Perumal (40) and the bus driver. The boy, a UKG student at a private school, was the only son to his parents Subramani, a supervisor at a private company, and Usha, police said.
