Amma Thittam - a big hit among Chennaiites

Sampath, a resident of Egmore was surprised when he got a community certificate for his son within a few hours of applying for it in the grievance redressal camp held at the Corporation Middle School at Pantheon Road, Egmore. Hundreds of people like him, who visited the camp conducted as part of the Amma Thittam (Amma Scheme) on Tuesday, were amazed at the response they received from the officials as they happily left home with the certificates they needed.

More than 600 people from the surrounding areas — Pudupet and Egmore — visited the camp at Egmore that was organised by the Egmore-Nungambakkam taluk office. Similar camps were also held in four other divisions in the city.

Officers from the taluk office, Chennai Corporation and civil supplies were at the camp as most people sought to obtain a community certificate. People also applied for residential certificates, legal heir certificate, migration certificates, income certificates, pension, change of patta and inclusion or exclusion of names in ration cards.

Safreen from Pudupet was glad that she could finally get community certificates for her two children  at the camp. “We had been trying for a long time. Now, they have asked for my husband’s certificate. I am just waiting for him to come back. This camp is really helpful,” she said.

But Ponnamma from Dr Santhosh Nagar, Egmore was clueless as to whether she would get her pension certificate for senior citizens. She said that she had submitted all the required documents but was unsure if that was enough. “They said I would get a letter within 30 days. I am not sure though,” she said as she sat outside the venue.

There were also those who could not get the documents that they had asked for and were asked to visit the offices of the local authorities for further processing. Valarmathi of Egmore wanted to get a birth certificate for her 12-year-old son and had tried in vain approaching the taluk office.
