Monsoon must-see for city music lovers

Travelling across eight cities in India, ‘Barkha Ritu,’ an event by Banyan Tree Events, will have a sojourn in Chennai with artistes Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Sudha Raghunathan performing at the show. The event that is in its 12th year will be coming to Chennai for the first time.

A brainchild of Mahesh Babu, Barkha Ritu features Hindustani artistes and he says that this year’s highlight is Carnatic musicians.

Babu says, “The show on Wednesday will feature two prominent artistes from both the schools of music. It will be a monsoon treat for the Chennai audience with performances by Carnatic artistes like Sudha Raghunathan.”

Promising to be an all-out musical treat, the show will present one of the most acclaimed musicians to city music lovers.

Padma Vibhushan Pandit  Shivkumar Sharma is a living legend, who has made a remarkable contribution to the field of music. Popularising the santoor among masses, today, he has made it indispensable in the world of classical music. Weaving adeptly his knowledge of the instrument with his creativity, Pandit Sharma has carved a school of music that resonates with his unique style.

Barkha Ritu will also feature Sudha Raghunathan, one of the leading voices of Carnatic music. The Padma Shri awardee, who is also a recipient of several prestigious awards, will be part of the show that celebrates monsoon ragas.

Babu adds, “Monsoon ragas are an integral part of Hindustani music. However, there are a few aspects of Carnatic music too that celebrate monsoon. We wanted to have a maestro like Sudhaji who is also a legend to be part of the show we are bringing to the city for the first time. It is an attempt to present the uniqueness of Hindustani music in Chennai. Earlier as part of the series, we have taken Carnatic music to the north.”

Banyan Tree Events has been promoting performance arts for 18 years now and some of its prominent shows include Ruhaniyat. Khusrau-Kabir, The Splendor of Masters and Dakshinayan.
